Job Description:

The City of Anaheim Public Works Department is seeking an experienced Vehicle Technician II to perform journey and advanced journey level work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel vehicles, motorcycles, and other equipment. Fleet Services provides quality and competitive maintenance services to our customers in a timely, environmentally friendly manner. Fleet Services has a 30-member team, operating out of a 47,000 square-foot, 30-bay repair facility. Fleet Services has an annual operating budget of approximately $12 million and is responsible for purchasing and maintaining all of the vehicles and motorized equipment used by the City of Anaheim. The ideal candidate must have three (3) years of experience as a vehicle and equipment mechanic diagnosing, repairing, over-hauling, and maintaining vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment. Candidates must also have a valid Class "C" California Driver's License. The selected candidate will have twelve (12) months to obtain at least two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in the area of Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck. Possession of a valid Class "M1" California Driver's License and an ASE Masters certification in Automobile and/or Medium/Heavy Truck is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will also have strong customer service values and is eager to work as part of a team. Candidates must provide their own basic mechanics hand tools. Additional Compensation Upon Completion of Probationary Period Possession of Mechanic Certification pay as a Master Automobile Technician or Master Heavy-Duty Truck Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence shall be paid in the amount of $200 for each successfully completed exam, with an annual maximum of $2,000 per Master Certification for Auto/Light Series or Medium Heavy-Duty Truck Series. Employees receive an additional $200 for each successfully completed exam for a second Master certification in either Auto/Light Truck series up to a maximum of $4,000 for a dual certification in both Series. Complete details are stated in Articles 58.1, 58.1.1, 58.1.2,58.1.3 and 58.1.4 of the AMEA General MOU. Essential Functions The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. As assigned, install, remove, maintain and repair emergency warning systems on vehicles and equipment, including lighting (emergency and other) systems and related components, audio and (sirens, radios, MDC etc.) communications systems and associated components, weapon mounts, K-9 kennels, and equipment such as push bars, prisoner cages, etc. Perform maintenance, repairs, and remove/install add-on equipment on all fleet vehicles. As assigned, remove, install, and maintain add-on equipment such as racks, winches, bumpers, toolboxes, etc. As assigned, remove and reinstall seats, carpeting, and interior components, interiors of doors. As assigned, remove and reinstall exterior body components (bumpers, wheels, fender-liners, headlights, taillights, grilles, tailgates, etc.) As assigned, cut openings and drill holes for fixtures and equipment, using electric drills and routers. As assigned, splice wires with knives or cutting pliers, solder and crimp connections to fixtures and equipment. As assigned, program lighting, siren, and accessory control systems. As assigned, install fuses, 12 Volt wiring harnesses, and power distribution sources as required. As assigned, assemble custom wiring harnesses, pigtails, terminals, and connectors. As assigned, fabricate various parts, brackets, and fixtures. Test drive, perform safety inspections on vehicles, and ensure all repairs have been completed. Requisition supplies and parts. Accurately record all maintenance and repairs in computerized fleet management system; make detailed notes on maintenance and repairs in fleet management system. Accurately record all time worked in computerized fleet management system. Utilize technology such as computers and handheld devices to manage workflow, send parts requests, send and receive emails through Microsoft Outlook, etc. Maintain and repair shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established policies. Perform emergency repairs out of shop as necessary; may be placed on-call to respond to afterhours emergency repair needs. Perform diagnostics on vehicles and equipment, repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions on vehicles & equipment utilizing diagnostic equipment. As assigned, provide guidance, mentoring, and training to Vehicle Technician I incumbents. Qualifications Candidates must have three (3) years of experience as a vehicle and equipment mechanic diagnosing, repairing, over-hauling, and maintaining vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment. Candidates must be in possession of a valid Class "C" California Driver's License (a valid Class "M1" California Driver's License is highly desirable). Candidates have twelve (12) months to obtain at least two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in the area of Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck (ASE Masters certification in Automobile and/or Medium/Heavy Truck highly desirable). Candidates must possess knowledge of 12 Volt automotive electrical system principles; automotive principles of gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel powered engines, electrical systems, power train and emissions control systems, braking and suspension systems, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), safety related systems, and applicable safety requirements. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to read and interpret automotive wiring diagrams and schematics; use various electrical tools such as but not limited to: multimeters, test lights, scan tools, wire cutters, crimpers, etc.; effectively use computer programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.); install various equipment when instructions are not available; present innovative ideas and improvised solutions when necessary; work independently in the absence of direct supervision; diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions in vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment. Communicate clearly both orally and in writing; use mechanics hand tools and diagnostic equipment; read, interpret and comprehend various technical manuals and other related materials; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Candidates must provide their own basic mechanics hand tools.
